A.R.E. Honors the Best in Retail Design

A.R.E., formerly NASFM, hosted its annual Retail Design Awards at GlobalShop Tuesday evening. The Store of the Year award went to Philippines-based supermarket retailer Landmark for its 94,000-sq.-ft. store, featuring innovative food displays, serpentine and oval shapes, and cut-out ceilings. Landmark's design was courtesy of Montclair, N.J.-based Hugh A. Boyd Architects. The Fixture of the Year award went to Greenwich, London-based O2 Concept Store for its eco-friendly Guru Bar, constructed from repurposed trees. O2 was designed by Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Jordan Parnass Digital Architecture, with fixtures from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, U.K.-based Bedford and Havenhand Shopfitting Ltd. DDI's Markopoulos Award honored Alfredo Paredes, executive vice president of global creative services, Polo Store Development and Home Collection Design Studio for New York-based Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. Additional grand prize winners were Italy-based Lavazza - Espression and Washington, D.C.-based Sweetgreen in the restaurant category; while San Francisco-based Cellar 360 won the award for specialty food retailer. For Softline Shop Within a Store, New York-based Saks Fifth Avenue: 8th Floor Shoes won the award and Jakarta, Indonesia-based Seibu won in the department store category. Hardline Specialty Store Up to 3,000 sq. ft. was awarded to Teaneck, N.J.-based 3rd Nature, while Hardline Specialty Store Up to 25,000 sq. ft. went to London-based Sony Ericsson. For Softline Specialty Store Up to 3,000 sq. ft., Toronto-based Capezio took the award, while Softline Specialty Store Up to 25,000 sq. ft. was awarded to G by Guess and Montreal-based Parasuco. The grand prize for Specialty Store Over 25,000 sq. ft. went to Mexico City-based Casa Palacio.
