Wal-Mart to Launch LED Pilot Program
July 30, 2009
Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is rolling out a new program that will introduce LED lighting to retail parking lots as part of an energy-efficiency initiative involving 11 major retailers and the U.S. Department of Energy, according to The New York Times. The retailer is currently testing the program in a Leavenworth, Kan., Wal-Mart parking lot, and hopes to update the overall appearance of shopping malls, cut down on energy and maintenance costs, and reduce light pollution. "We wanted to test the technology parameters of the recommendations…to find out how it actually performs in the environment and with our shoppers," said Don Moseley, Wal-Mart's director of sustainable facilities. The project will require a 10-year maintenance time frame (compared to the current two-year re-lamping time frame), and will feature controlled optics to focus the light on the parking lot, preventing it from drifting out into nearby communities.
