J.C. Penney Opens First LEED Store

Plano, Texas-based J.C. Penney Co. Inc. has opened its first LEED-certified store at The Village at Fairview in Fairview, Texas, according to Costar.com. At 115,000 sq. ft., the store is designed to consume 41 percent less energy than the average similar building, and features a reflective white roof; energy-efficient lighting; landscape materials and plumbing fixtures that will reduce water consumption; use of regional materials; and an HVAC system that is 20 percent more energy efficient. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has also certified the Fairview location as "Designed to Earn the Energy Star," making J.C. Penney the first national retailer to receive the honor.
