Walgreens Opens Green Drugstore in Mira Mesa, Calif.
June 25, 2009
Today, Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreen Co. will open the first drugstore to reach top environmental standards for efficiency and design in Mira Mesa, Calif. The new location has been designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria and will offer bike racks and reserved parking for hybrid cars. Skylights, LED lights and solar tubes will light the interior of the store, cutting energy use by 50 percent. “Walgreens is making great progress on our environmental initiatives in stores chainwide. We're cutting our electricity and water usage, recycling tons of cardboard and shrink wrap each year, and upgrading equipment for maximum efficiency,” said Matt Sesto, market vice president of Walgreens. The drugstore chain hopes to reveal its next LEED-registered store in Chicago this fall.
