SUPERVALU Ends Fingerprint Payment System
March 25, 2008
Eden Prairie, Minn.-based SUPERVALU Inc. will no longer offer a fingerprint-verification payment system in its stores, according to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. The company will no longer offer the service because the vendor, San Francisco-based Solidus Networks Inc., owner of Pay By Touch, announced that it has stopped its biometric transactions. SUPERVALU used the Pay By Touch system in several stores, including Cub Foods, Jewel-Osco, bigg's, Farm Fresh, Hornbacher's and Albertsons. Solidus, which filed for bankruptcy protection in December, said that insufficient funding and current market conditions meant that it could not support the biometric payment system any longer.
