SpendingPulse for February Shows Increases
March 17, 2010
Purchase, N.Y.-based MasterCard Advisors released its February 2010 SpendingPulse results, highlighting retail performance of specific retailers in the United States. The ecommerce arena saw a 16.7 percent increase from the same time period last year, while luxury ex-jewelry sales rose 15.2 percent and consumer electronics increased 5.8 percent. According to the report, severe snowstorms negatively impacted apparel sales in the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and North Central regions of the country, potentially accounting for a 1.8 percent decrease in apparel sales. The decrease was driven primarily by women’s apparel, down 1.6 percent, while men’s apparel rose 5.7 percent and men’s footwear increased 2.2 percent. SpendingPulse is a macro-economic report based on aggregate sales activity in the MasterCard payments network, and does not represent MasterCard financial performance.
