Consumers to Spend $14.44 Billion for Easter

Washington, D.C.-based The National Retail Federation (NRF) released its 2008 Easter Consumer Intentions and Actions survey conducted by Worthington, Ohio-based BIGresearch LLC. The survey revealed that consumers will spend approximately $14.44 billion on Easter food, apparel, gifts, flowers, decorations and candy. On average, consumers will spend $135.03 for the holiday, with the majority of shoppers spending the most on Easter related meals. Discount stores are expected to see 58.8 percent of Easter shoppers, followed by department stores at 35.6 percent, specialty stores at 23.6 percent and specialty clothing stores receiving 7.6 percent of the traffic. Adults between the ages of 25 and 34 are expected to spend, on average, $151.41 for Easter 2008. This year, the holiday falls on March 23, 2008, making it the earliest Easter celebration since 1913.
