ShopperTrak Releases January, Early February Sales Results
March 11, 2010
Chicago-based ShopperTrak RCT Corporation released its National Retail Sales Estimate (NRSE). According to the report, January sales increased 2 percent, with total United States foot traffic remaining flat for the same time period compared to last year. “Although positive performance is typically the norm in early January as gift cards have effectively lengthened the holiday shopping season, our data shows pent up demand and a willingness to spend continued beyond gift card redemptions early in the month,” said Bill Martin, co-founder of ShopperTrak. Sales for the week ending February 6, 2010 increased 1.3 percent, while weekly sales increased 4 percent. The NRSE is developed from the U.S. Commerce Department’s GAFO (general merchandise, apparel, furniture, sporting goods, electronics, hobby, books and related stores sales), in addition to ShopperTrak’s information on shopper movement and sales statistics. The ShopperTrak Retail Traffic Index reviews traffic from five separate retail segments.
