Ahold Exploring Harris Teeter Buyout

Royal Ahold NV, the Dutch owner of Stop & Shop stores, is interested in purchasing Matthews, N.C.-based Harris Teeter Supermarkets Inc., according to Bloomberg. Ahold has reportedly contacted JPMorgan Chase & Co. to evaluate options and is seeking more information on the sale process. Buying the chain would help Ahold expand further in the southern United States and Washington, D.C. Harris Teeter, which was co-founded in 1960 by two North Carolina grocers, has more than 200 stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and Washington, D.C.
