Gap Launches E-Commerce Sites in the U.K.
August 30, 2010
As the company continues to expand internationally and online in 2010, San Francisco-based Gap Inc. has launched its dedicated European e-commerce site for Gap and Banana Republic in the United Kingdom. Following the initial launch for U.K. consumers, the company plans to offer shipping to customers in an additional nine countries this fall, including Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. "We put a lot of research and time into building a dedicated U.K. e-commerce platform," said Stephen Sunnucks, president, Gap Inc. Europe. "We established a local distribution center to enable us to offer an exceptional customer experience within the U.K., and establish the foundation to expand online shopping to more European countries this fall.”
During the second quarter of 2010, Gap expanded its e-commerce reach from one country to 55 through international shipping. This is in addition to the dedicated e-commerce sites launched last week in Canada. By the end of the year, the company expects to have stores in China, Italy and Australia, which combined with its expanding online and franchise operations, will reach customers in a total of about 80 countries.
