STORES magazine has released its Hot 100 Retailers list, which was compiled by Kantar Retail and featured in the magazine’s August issue. The list highlights retail companies that reported the greatest increase in domestic sales between 2008 and 2009.
Secaucus, N.J.-based off-price menswear company SYMS claimed the No. 1 spot this year. In 2009, SYMS bought 20 Filene’s Basement locations, and now offers discount designer men’s and women’s attire. Citi Trends (No. 10), Ross Stores (No. 21) and TJX (No. 29) are among other off-price retailers who also made the list this year.
Coming in at No. 2 this year was Tesco’s Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market. The company opened a total of 145 locations last year, with the number of units growing 26 percent.
No. 3, aftermarket auto-part company O’Reilly Automotive, saw a sales growth of more than 35 percent from 2008 to 2009.
With 2009 sales increasing 34.3 percent from 2008, teen-fashion retailer rue21 landed the No. 4 spot. The company boosted its store count last year by 20 percent and has plans to open another 100 stores in 2010. Aéropostale (No. 8) and The Buckle (No. 9), two other teen retailers, also landed in the top 10.
Verizon Wireless (No. 5), Amazon.com (No. 6) and Netflix (No. 7) joined the top ranks this year as well. “The changing retail landscape has undoubtedly opened up doors for some retailers who may not have been top of mind a few years back,” said Susan Reda, editor, STORES Media. “The importance of brand recognition has never been more relevant, but consumer demand for value has never been more prevalent.”
Additionally, the following 16 retailers have made the STORES Hot 100 list every year since its inception in 2006: Amazon.com, CVS Caremark, O’Reilly Automotive, Aeropostale, Urban Outfitters, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, Dress Barn, J.Crew Group, Tractor Supply Co., Best Buy, Ross Stores, Walgreens, Dollar Tree Stores, Cabela’s and PetSmart.
