Walmart Opens Second-Ever Chicago Superstore
January 26, 2012
Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. opened its second-ever Walmart supercenter in Chicago on Jan. 25. Situated in the Chatham Market shopping center, the 157,000-sq.-ft. store is the culmination of a seven-year battle to establish a store on the former steel site. The new store features a full line of groceries, as well as a bakery, deli, frozen food section, and meat, dairy and fresh produce sections. The store also includes various general merchandise areas, such as a pharmacy, apparel and accessories, sporting goods, electronics, home, lawn and garden, fine jewelry, and health and beauty. This new store marks the retailer's fifth location in Chicago, but only the second supercenter (a 10,000-sq.-ft. Walmart Express also opened in Chatham in July). Currently, the company operates more than 9,600 retail units under 69 different banners in 28 countries.
